LAHORE: At least 15 people were killed and 1,631 others injured in 1,374 road traffic crashes reported across all 38 districts of Punjab during the last 24 hours, according to the Emergency Services Department (ESD).
The ESD said 783 victims who sustained serious injuries were shifted to different hospitals for further medical treatment, while 848 people with minor injuries were provided treatment at the crash sites by Rescue Medical Teams, helping reduce the burden on hospitals.
According to the department’s analysis, around 80 percent of the crashes involved motorcycles, highlighting the need for effective enforcement of traffic laws, adherence to lane discipline and greater road-safety awareness.
The data showed that the victims included 919 drivers, 71 underage drivers, 152 pedestrians and 575 passengers.
Lahore recorded the highest number of crashes, with 258 incidents affecting 312 people. Multan ranked second with 95 crashes and 112 victims, while Faisalabad stood third with 94 crashes involving 112 victims.
Overall, 1,646 people were affected by road traffic crashes, including 1,307 males and 339 females. Of the victims, 325 were under 18 years of age, 857 were between 18 and 40, while 464 were above 40 years of age.
The vehicles involved in the reported crashes included 1,548 motorcycles, 96 auto-rickshaws, 124 motorcars, 29 vans, 11 passenger buses, 38 trucks and 75 other vehicles and slow-moving carts.
The figures underscore the growing road-safety challenge in Punjab and the need for stricter traffic-law enforcement, responsible driving practices and improved compliance with lane discipline to reduce the frequency and severity of road traffic crashes.
