Kathmandu,Nepal has plunged into political chaos as the Army Chief announced late Tuesday night that the military has taken control of security in the capital after the resignation of both the Prime Minister and the President.
Protesters set fire to the parliament building in Kathmandu earlier in the day, intensifying the unrest that has swept across the country in recent weeks. Despite the resignations of the Prime Minister and several key ministers, officials confirmed that the current cabinet will continue functioning under interim arrangements.
Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel, in a televised address, pledged to protect the lives and property of citizens and called on all political factions to engage in dialogue. “The only path forward is through negotiations. We must restore stability and prevent further unrest,” General Sigdel said.
He urged protesters to halt demonstrations and join peace talks, stressing that the military’s intervention is focused on ensuring order rather than seizing political power.
The crisis, triggered by widespread anger over government corruption and economic mismanagement, has left Nepal’s future uncertain as military and civilian leaders struggle to chart a way forward.
