ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has claimed Turkey achieved a 50% improvement in its international ranking across reading, mathematics and science in the PISA 2025 assessment. Speaking at a ceremony marking the new 2026-27 school year at Gazi Anatolian High School in Ankara, he said Turkey was the only country to make significant progress in all three subjects simultaneously.
Andreas Schleicher, OECD’s Director for Education and Skills, confirmed Turkish students improved across all three subjects between 2022 and 2025, with the proportion of low-performing students also declining significantly. He described Turkey’s education system as “genuinely moving forward.”
The progress comes as many education systems worldwide grapple with declining foundational skills among students in the post-pandemic period. However, PISA results do not directly prove the success of any single government policy but rather reflect longer-term educational trends.
