Two countries remain in a state of war; Hormuz, nuclear programme and sanctions still divide Washington and Tehran
WASHINGTON: The Trump administration has approved visas for Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to attend the high-level session of the UN General Assembly in New York next week.
The US State Department said it had cleared visas for Iran’s high-level delegation and the staff needed for the meeting. US officials confirmed that Pezeshkian and Araghchi are part of the delegation.
The move comes as the United States and Iran remain in a state of war that began on February 28 this year. Large-scale fighting has now stopped, but a lasting settlement remains distant.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a key flashpoint, and several major issues under the US-Iran memorandum of understanding (MoU) are still unresolved. The two sides remain sharply divided over the nuclear issue, sanctions and the future of the strait.
There are currently no signs of a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz or to resume negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme.
