New York ): US President Donald Trump and New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a cordial meeting despite their stark ideological differences, drawing significant attention from political circles. Trump made an unusual visit on Monday to the mayor’s official residence, Gracie Mansion — the first time in 44 years that a sitting US president has visited a New York mayor’s official residence.
During the meeting, the two leaders discussed key issues including the housing crisis, protections for immigrants, urban development, and press freedom. Mamdani proposed a major housing plan to build 12,000 residential units over a railway yard, which he said would require federal government support. He also voiced opposition to Trump’s immigration crackdown and the revocation of temporary protected status for citizens of crisis-hit countries, including Haiti.
New York-born Trump, despite the differences, expressed hope that Mamdani would prove to be an excellent mayor. On the question of press freedom, Mamdani said he would ensure all journalists have access, while Trump reiterated his allegations that the media spreads “fake news.” Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist, was also scheduled to meet Senator Bernie Sanders, a sharp critic of Trump, following the encounter.
