WASHINGTON, — A new CNN/SSRS poll finds that just 26% of Americans approve of President Donald Trump’s handling of the Iran war, while 73% disapprove — a sharp drop from the 33% approval recorded in March.
The poll, conducted September 16–17 among 1,206 U.S. adults, shows the decline isn’t limited to Democrats. Republican approval fell from 73% in March to 60% now, while 53% of Republicans under 45 and 54% of non-MAGA-aligned Republicans disapprove of the administration’s approach.
A separate Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week put Trump’s overall approval at 32%, with 34% backing his handling of the Iran strikes.
The polling also reveals deep uncertainty: 75% say Trump has no clear plan for Iran, 78% say he isn’t doing enough to end the war, and 69% believe a prolonged military conflict is likely. 76% of Americans say the war was not worth the cost in American lives and government spending.
Trump’s broader foreign policy standing is also under pressure — only 29% approve of his handling of foreign affairs, down from 39% in January, and just 20% believe his foreign policy decisions have improved America’s standing globally, while 65% say they’ve damaged it. The numbers come ahead of November’s midterm elections and as Trump made Iran a centerpiece of his UN General Assembly address this week.
