Gaza: Updated satellite imagery released on Google Maps on Monday shows large parts of Gaza’s densely populated residential areas reduced to rubble. Neighborhoods that were once crowded now appear as open, barren ground.
According to the UN Satellite Centre, about 82% of Gaza’s buildings, or 201,290 structures, had been affected as of June 16, 2026. That includes 134,422 destroyed, 13,848 severely damaged and 28,096 moderately damaged, with another 24,924 possibly damaged. Around 328,627 housing units were also hit. A February report by the UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing said more than 200,000 tonnes of explosives were dropped on Gaza over nearly two years.
Despite the US-led ceasefire in force since Oct 10, 2025, dangers persist. Dozens of buildings weakened by Israeli strikes have reportedly collapsed onto civilians, and thousands more have deep cracks that make them vulnerable to rain and strong winds. Restrictions on bringing in temporary housing and caravans have left Palestinians facing homelessness and a severe shortage of shelter.
Since Oct 8, 2023, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and over 175,000 injured, while about 90% of the territory’s infrastructure has been destroyed.
