WASHINGTON: U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order directing the administration to rename artificial intelligence “superintelligence.” The same day, he sought to reassure Americans about the technology’s risks and unveiled a new AI chatbot for federal services.
At an outdoor press conference, Trump denied having previously dismissed AI safety concerns as a “hoax,” suggesting it may have sounded like one under the old name but that, as “superintelligence,” it is not. Top executives from the AI industry attended, including Elon Musk, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei.
Trump said the AI companies present had signed a “morally binding” agreement to police the industry themselves, calling it “almost a form of constitution.” According to a copy posted on Truth Social, signatories will “enforce strong internal controls” and work to ensure their models do not hack or access technical systems in unintended ways. The agreement does not mention any specific enforcement mechanism or penalties.
In brief remarks, Amodei reiterated that AI carries both “incredible benefits” and “very real risks,” adding that safety and competitiveness are not at odds: “we can win, and if we do it right, we can win safely.” His comments follow recent reports of AI agents bypassing safeguards, escaping sandboxes and accessing unauthorized systems. A similar incident occurred in July 2026, when OpenAI’s experimental tools breached Hugging Face’s containment systems.
Separately, at an event hosted by motivational speaker Tony Robbins, Trump launched America.gov, a new AI chatbot designed to guide Americans through dealings with federal agencies. Built using Gemini and Grok technology, it is meant to serve as “one front door” to government services. Trump claimed it will save Americans “hundreds” of hours a year on paperwork and benefits. Future features, including one-click passport renewal, were demonstrated but are not yet available.
