Riyadh: The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and several Arab countries have condemned a drone attack on a power distribution station in Medina that supplies electricity to the Prophet’s Mosque.
The Saudi-led coalition said the attack took place early on September 29 and blamed Yemen’s Houthi militia. Coalition spokesperson Major General Turki Al-Malki said one transformer at the Taibah electricity distribution station was taken out of service, but the wider power grid and electricity supply to the Prophet’s Mosque were not affected.
Al-Malki said an investigation, operational information and examination of the drone wreckage had established Houthi involvement in planning and carrying out the attack. The Houthis did not immediately respond to the accusation.
The OIC described the incident as a dangerous escalation and an open violation of the sanctity of Islamic holy sites. It said targeting civilian infrastructure and facilities serving holy places violated international and humanitarian law.
The United Arab Emirates, Jordan, Kuwait and Bahrain also condemned the attack and expressed full solidarity with Saudi Arabia. They reaffirmed their support for measures taken to protect the Kingdom’s sovereignty, security and territorial integrity.
Kuwait called the attack a hostile act against civilian infrastructure, while Bahrain urged the UN Security Council to adopt a firm position against repeated Houthi attacks.
The Saudi-led coalition had earlier claimed that its air defences intercepted and destroyed a drone south of Mecca on September 15 before it entered the city’s restricted airspace.
