SANAA, The Yemeni army has taken control of the Dhubab area near the strategic Bab al-Mandab waterway during a major offensive against the Houthi movement, Yemeni military officials and regional sources said.
Rashad al-Alimi, Yemen’s president and chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, announced a large-scale military operation named “Dawn of Yemen” on Sunday. Its aims are to recapture Houthi-held territory, restore state institutions, free Sanaa and end the insurgency. On Monday, Alimi said that with the will of the nation, the courage of the army and the support of brothers, Yemen would move toward a new dawn.
Government forces are advancing toward Dhubab from the mountainous Kahboub area, while other units are moving north along the west coast toward Mocha. Pressure is reportedly mounting on Houthi forces around Bab al-Mandab and Mayun Island.
Yemeni armed forces spokesman Maj Gen Majid Abdullah al-Nazili said the latest attacks were carried out on the instructions of the political leadership and that operations continue on multiple fronts under approved plans. He said 1,122 Houthi infrastructure targets were hit in Saada, al-Jawf and Taiz. According to field reports, he added, 1,747 fighters were neutralised and 364 military vehicles, equipment and supply-transport units were destroyed or disabled.
According to Al Jazeera, the armed forces have announced a “war of liberation” to retake state institutions from the Houthis and end their rebellion. Fighting has intensified in Taiz, a key province linking Houthi-held northern areas with government-controlled areas in the south.
