SEOUL: Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi arrived in South Korea on Wednesday, the first leg of a three-day Asia tour. According to Egypt’s presidency, he landed at Seoul Air Base. He will travel on to Malaysia and Indonesia in the later stages of the trip.
South Korea’s Yonhap news agency, citing the presidential office, reported that Sisi was invited by President Lee Jae-myung, and that the two leaders are scheduled to meet on Thursday. The talks are expected to focus on trade, investment, infrastructure and economic cooperation, as well as promoting people-to-people ties.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung said regional political developments and other international issues would also be on the agenda. Seoul hopes the visit will help elevate relations with Egypt to a strategic partnership and strengthen cooperation in Africa and the Middle East.
This is Sisi’s first visit to South Korea since 2016. The two leaders last met in Cairo in November 2025, during Lee’s visit to Egypt. Both countries are expanding cooperation in trade, investment and the defense industry, and aim to build closer cultural and educational ties.
