GAZA (International Desk): Gaza’s government media office says Israel has dropped more than 223,000 tons of explosives on the territory since October 7, 2023. The office says this is more than six times the combined explosive energy of the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The figures are estimates by Gaza’s government body, and no comprehensive public military record exists to verify them independently. The same office made the same claim in July 2026, when the war passed 1,000 days.
The comparison calls for caution: conventional munitions are measured by weight in tons, while nuclear yield is measured in kilotons of TNT equivalent, so the two cannot be treated as directly equal.
Citing the Palestinian Health Ministry, Reuters reported on October 7, 2026 that more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began, while The Washington Post reported 74,245 deaths. Despite a ceasefire announced in October 2025, Reuters says more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed afterwards. Israeli officials describe the strikes as operations against Hamas and other armed groups, while Palestinian officials and rights groups have raised concern over civilian deaths, displacement and destruction of infrastructure.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, more than 60 million tons of debris had accumulated in Gaza by July 2026. A shortage of heavy machinery, fuel, safe routes and funding is slowing recovery.
