ISLAMABAD — Report By Muhammad Saleem .Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said there is no longer any room to avoid imposing an emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Speaking informally to journalists in Islamabad, he asked how the matter could possibly be averted, adding that Maulana Fazlur Rehman could confirm how hard he had tried to prevent it.
The federal government has decided to impose an emergency in the province. The decision was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by President Asif Ali Zardari and attended by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and federal ministers. A federal cabinet meeting has been summoned tomorrow morning for final approval.
Separately, KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi told a private TV channel that governor’s rule would be imposed across the province, while an emergency might apply to only some districts. He said further talks with the PTI were unlikely, claiming its members were either in hiding or offering themselves for arrest. He added that if Suhail Afridi committed any illegal act, he was “not such a big man” and anyone could be arrested. Kundi also warned of a harsh response if PTI supporters approached the Governor House.
