WASHINGTON: The US military has prepared options for possible new strikes against Iran, including the potential use of the GBU-43/B Massive Ordnance Air Blast bomb, commonly known as the “Mother of All Bombs,” according to a report attributed to CNN.
Citing US officials familiar with the planning, the report said Iranian energy infrastructure and facilities linked to the country’s nuclear programme could be targeted if President Donald Trump authorises renewed military action. No final decision on the strikes or the weapon’s deployment was reported.
Sources said the options included a suspected underground facility at Pickaxe Mountain. However, US officials questioned whether the weapon would be effective against deeply buried sites protected by thick layers of rock and other fortifications.
According to the report, the MOAB is designed to produce a powerful blast over a wide area rather than penetrate deep underground. Some sources described its possible use as an option for increasing psychological pressure alongside military action.
The report also highlighted concerns that deploying the weapon near populated areas or civilian infrastructure could cause extensive destruction and civilian casualties.
