Washington: The US Department of Justice said two Indian nationals were among 28 non-citizens charged with election-related offences in California as part of an alleged voter registration fraud investigation, with 11 of the defendants arrested.
According to the Justice Department, those charged include 30-year-old Amandeep Kaur of Rancho Palos Verdes and 67-year-old Kamlesh Navnitlal Shah of Sacramento. Kaur is accused of fraudulently registering to vote in December 2022 and voting in the November 2024 general election, while Shah is accused of registering and voting on Election Day in November 2024.
The action was carried out under “Operation Protect the Vote,” a coordinated effort involving all four US Attorney’s Offices in California. The department said all 28 defendants are green card holders and face allegations including falsely claiming US citizenship, unlawful voter registration and casting illegal ballots.
California Acting Deputy Attorney General Trent McCotter said all 28 defendants were among more than 20,000 potentially non-citizen registered voters whose names were provided to state election officials last week. He called on the state to verify the citizenship status of flagged voters before counting mail-in ballots.
The Justice Department said federal authorities have arrested 113 people across 20 states over the past seven weeks on allegations of illegal voter registration and voting, with at least 50 charged specifically with voting as non-citizens.
