Gaza: Hospitals in Gaza are at risk of losing electricity as fuel supplies for their power generators have run out, the territory’s Health Ministry has warned.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the ministry said the remaining generators were operating under complex engineering and technical conditions and faced the risk of immediate mechanical failure. It warned that a generator shutdown could disrupt electricity supply to several critical departments and units providing life-saving medical care.
The ministry said hospitals require more than 2,500 litres of fuel every month to operate their generators. It added that it had repeatedly warned that emergency fuel supplies, provided in limited quantities, would not keep the generators running for long, particularly given their extended operating hours and urgent maintenance needs.
The Health Ministry called on all relevant parties to fulfil their humanitarian responsibilities and take immediate action to ensure the entry of fuel and spare parts needed to keep the generators operational.
Gaza’s healthcare system continues to struggle amid widespread damage to the territory’s infrastructure and ongoing Israeli violations of the Gaza ceasefire. According to the ministry, more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed and around 175,000 injured since October 2023, while nearly 90 per cent of the territory’s infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged.
