Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signalled readiness for a ceasefire based on the current front line, amid US pressure to end the war. Under the proposal, Russian-occupied territory—roughly 25 per cent of Ukraine—would remain under Moscow’s control for the time being, while Kyiv would seek firm security guarantees from its allies.
Hours after Putin agreed in principle to resume trilateral talks, Russia launched a massive overnight attack on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions. Zelenskyy said Russia fired 21 ballistic missiles at the capital in three waves, including missiles carrying cluster warheads. At least nine people were killed and more than 56 injured across Ukraine in the past 24 hours; in Kyiv and its surrounding region, at least two people died and 34 were wounded.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia used Iskander-M, S-400, Zircon and Onyx missiles, along with 210 drones, including 110 jet-powered drones. Ukrainian air defences reported downing or suppressing 181 drones, but strikes were recorded at 32 locations. Residential buildings, energy facilities, railway and metro infrastructure, shopping centres, businesses and a monastery were damaged.
Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed “in principle” to resume Russia-US-Ukraine peace talks after a roughly three-hour meeting with US special envoy Steve Witkoff in St Petersburg. The Kremlin said the talks could begin after November 10, possibly in Abu Dhabi, and would focus on post-war security arrangements for both Russia and Ukraine.
Moscow’s mayor accused Ukraine of launching 630 drones toward the Russian capital, saying most were intercepted and two people were injured. Russia has not endorsed the latest peace proposals, while US President Donald Trump has claimed that an end to the war is closer than before.
