A drone strike hit a busy market in Nyala, capital of South Darfur, on Monday evening. The local rights group Emergency Lawyers said more than 100 people were killed and 113 injured, many of them women and children. The group blamed the Sudanese army and called for an independent investigation.
Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Nyala Teaching Hospital, which it supports, had received 36 bodies, 21 of them in civilian clothing, and was treating about 150 wounded. MSF described the story as still developing, and the differing casualty figures have not been independently verified.
Nyala is controlled by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has fought the army since 2023. Drone attacks by both sides have escalated sharply in recent weeks, and the UN says drones have become the deadliest threat to civilians in the conflict.
