ABU DHABI — OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has said that advanced AI models are now mostly smarter than the world’s leading scientists and can handle significant portions of white-collar work. He made the remarks at the opening of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference (ADIPEC).
Altman said AI was largely behind the brightest scientists at the start of the year but has since moved ahead in many areas. He stressed that humans must retain control over consequential decisions, and that AI should remain a tool for people rather than a replacement for human judgment.
He identified energy supply as the biggest constraint on AI’s expansion, given the power demands of data centres and advanced models. OpenAI also announced partnerships with UAE technology group G42 and state oil company ADNOC, under which ADNOC will become the first energy company worldwide to deploy OpenAI’s frontier models.
