TEL AVIV (International Desk) – Israel has stepped up emergency preparations in the northern city of Karmiel amid fears of renewed war.
The municipality said Mayor Moshe Konenski instructed the city’s security chief and teams to inspect every public shelter and ensure the city is ready for an emergency. It stressed that the Israeli military’s Home Front Command has not changed its guidelines.
The move follows Israeli media reports that the US is preparing a possible new attack on Iran after the American midterm elections, amid disagreements over conditions for resuming talks. Iran has threatened an immediate and severe response.
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, reportedly killing Iran’s supreme leader and more than 40 military and political figures. Iran retaliated with drone and missile attacks on US bases in the region and direct missile strikes on Israel, causing widespread damage and forcing residents to spend long periods in shelters.
A ceasefire was reached in April through Pakistani and Turkish mediation. In June, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but its implementation stalled over security disagreements. Behind-the-scenes diplomacy continues, though the risk of a US strike grows if it fails.
