TEHRAN (International Desk) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei warned on Wednesday that even the slightest sign of surrender during ongoing diplomatic efforts to ease tensions with Washington would embolden the United States.
In a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB, he said such a stance would only encourage an “arrogant enemy” to seek further abuses, more wars and further audacity. He warned that if aggression is repeated, a new conflict would take on far wider dimensions.
The remarks are his first since the US midterm elections, in which President Donald Trump’s Republican Party reportedly lost control of both chambers of Congress.
The US and Israel launched strikes on Iran on February 28, prompting Iranian drone and missile attacks on US bases in the region and on Israel. A ceasefire was reached in April through Pakistani and Turkish mediation. In June, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, but implementation stalled over security disagreements. Behind-the-scenes diplomacy continues, though the risk of a US strike grows if it fails.
