The couple had reportedly been held under the custody of Taliban intelligence since early this year, raising concerns among human rights groups and triggering quiet negotiations led by the UK government.
Their release is expected to ease recent tensions between Britain and Afghanistan’s de facto rulers, though London has not formally recognized the Taliban government since its return to power in 2021.
