LEH, (International Desk):
Indian authorities have imposed a curfew in Ladakh following violent protests demanding statehood and constitutional safeguards for the region.
The curfew was enforced after clashes erupted in Leh on Wednesday, leaving at least four people dead and more than 80 injured, including police personnel. Security forces used batons and tear gas to disperse demonstrators, while protesters set vehicles ablaze and attacked offices of the BJP and the Hill Council.
Markets and business centers remain closed as paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed across the city. Authorities have also banned public gatherings and rallies without prior permission.
The protests highlight growing discontent in Ladakh, which has been demanding statehood and constitutional protections since 2019, when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government revoked Article 370 of the Indian Constitution and separated Ladakh from Jammu and Kashmir, turning it into a federally administered territory.
