Tehran / London / Paris / Berlin,(Reuters) — Iran has recalled its ambassadors from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom for consultations, following the European powers’ decision to trigger the “snapback” mechanism to reinstate United Nations sanctions on Tehran.
Under the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the JCPOA, the “snapback” clause allows automatic reimposition of previously lifted UN sanctions if Iran is found in material breach of its obligations.
The sanctions are expected to go into effect late Sunday (midnight GMT) unless Tehran convinces the UN Security Council otherwise.
European nations assert they have fulfilled the procedural requirements under UNSC Resolution 2231 and that Iran has violated its commitments, while Tehran condemns the move as illegitimate and politically motivated.
Analysts say this step signals a further deterioration in diplomacy over Iran’s nuclear program and may deepen regional tensions.
