Rome: Two migrant boats sank off the coast of Italy, resulting in at least two confirmed deaths and dozens of people missing, authorities reported on Monday.
According to officials, one of the vessels was carrying 85 migrants from Pakistan, Eritrea, and Somalia. Fourteen survivors were rescued by the coast guard, while search and rescue operations continue for the others still missing.
A second boat, with 35 people on board, also went down in rough seas. One body has been recovered, and 24 others remain missing, officials confirmed.
The United Nations reports that since 2014, more than 32,700 migrants have lost their lives in the Mediterranean Sea while attempting to reach Europe — making it one of the world’s deadliest migration routes.
