SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters): Global e-commerce and technology giant Amazon is preparing to lay off approximately 30,000 corporate employees starting Tuesday, as part of a broad restructuring aimed at reducing costs and addressing over-hiring during the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Reuters, the job cuts are expected to affect multiple divisions, including Human Resources, Operations, Devices and Services, and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
While the layoffs represent a small fraction of Amazon’s total workforce of around 1.55 million, they account for nearly 10% of its corporate staff, estimated at 350,000 employees.
If completed, this will mark Amazon’s largest round of layoffs since 2022, when the company cut approximately 27,000 positions amid slowing growth and shifting consumer demand.
The move comes as the company continues to streamline operations and refocus on core business areas, following years of aggressive expansion during the pandemic-driven e-commerce boom.
