LAHORE: Punjab University’s Human Rights Chair organised a national conference on International Human Rights Day, with Speaker of the Punjab Assembly Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan as the chief guest. The event was attended by Pro-Vice Chancellor Dr. Khalid Mahmood, senior journalist Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami, legal expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi, Human Rights Chair Dr. Abida Ashraf, Dr. Bushra Rahman, Dr. Mujahid Gilani, Dr. Amjad Abbas Magsi, faculty members, and students from various universities.
Speaking at the conference, Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan noted that while millions protested Israeli atrocities in Palestine worldwide, similar large-scale protests were absent in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. He questioned why, despite global recognition of the genocide, the United States continues to use its veto power, undermining the United Nations’ credibility.
He added that people in Occupied Kashmir live under constant military surveillance and psychological pressure, with the Indian government taking measures to expel Muslims and alter the region’s demographics. He stressed that efforts for Kashmir and Palestine are insufficient and that the responsibility to speak up lies with all political parties collectively. Warning about the consequences of war, he said even vegetation would not survive for 200 years in a nuclear conflict.
Dr. Khalid Mahmood highlighted that the Khutba Hajjatul Wida is the foundation of human rights, and advocating for Kashmir and Palestine is a moral duty. Mujeeb-ur-Rehman Shami criticised the UN’s inaction, noting that over 80,000 Palestinians have been martyred, yet global powers remain largely silent.
Legal expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi pointed out serious violations of the 4th Geneva Convention in Kashmir, highlighting mistreatment of minorities in India and warning that the ideology of “Akhand Bharat” poses a threat to global peace. He also noted Israel’s aggressive use of religious doctrine in foreign policy.
Dr. Mujahid Gilani presented a report on human rights abuses in Kashmir, including kidnappings, sexual violence, and forced widowing. Dr. Amjad Magsi emphasised that Punjab University has consistently raised its voice against such violations, while Dr. Bushra Rahman noted the Human Rights Chair’s role over the past four years in promoting awareness. Dr. Abida Ashraf stressed that global powers’ indifference to Kashmir and Palestine must be countered, and that support for oppressed communities in Sudan and among the Rohingya is equally important, reflecting universal principles of humanity and equality.
