According to local media, two armed individuals opened fire at a gathering of Jewish community members at the beach, triggering panic among attendees and bystanders. Australian police described the incident as an act of terrorism.
Police officials said that one of the attackers was killed at the scene, while the second suspect was taken into custody. Authorities have launched a full investigation into the motive and circumstances surrounding the attack.
Australian media further reported that a civilian present at the scene bravely intervened, overpowering one of the attackers and disarming him, an action credited with preventing further casualties.
The civilian has been identified by media outlets as 43-year-old Ahmed Al Ahmed, a fruit vendor in Sydney and father of two. Reports said he sustained two gunshot wounds to the arm while attempting to restrain the attacker. He is currently receiving treatment in hospital, where doctors say his condition is stable and out of danger.
Media reports also named one of the alleged attackers as Naveed Akram; however, authorities have not yet officially confirmed the identity.
The incident has shocked Australia, prompting renewed debate over public safety and security at large public gatherings.
