Rawalpindi: Pakistan’s military has said it will not allow Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) to fall into the hands of militants and will continue operations to protect national security.
Speaking at a press conference, Director General ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the fight against terrorism is a national responsibility and that extremist groups have no link with Islam or local identities. He warned that some elements opposing counterterrorism operations are indirectly supporting militants.
The military said more than 75,000 counterterrorism operations were carried out last year, mainly in KP and Balochistan. During this period, 27 suicide attacks and over 5,300 terrorist incidents were reported nationwide. At least 1,235 people were killed, while 2,597 militants were eliminated.
Lt Gen Chaudhry said militant groups continue to operate from Afghanistan despite assurances under the Doha Agreement that Afghan soil would not be used for terrorism. He added that weapons left behind after the withdrawal of foreign forces are being used in attacks inside Pakistan.
The military also accused India of supporting militant groups targeting Pakistan and stressed that full implementation of the National Action Plan is essential to defeat terrorism.
He said lasting peace in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is necessary for development and stability, adding that the armed forces will continue operations to ensure security
