President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States will send 5,000 additional troops to Poland, in a move that signals a selective reinforcement of American military presence in Eastern Europe — even as Washington continues to scale back its broader footprint across the continent.
Trump said the decision was directly influenced by the election of Karol Nawrocki, a nationalist politician, to the Polish presidency. The move is seen as a diplomatic reward to Warsaw for its political alignment with the Trump administration’s worldview.
The announcement comes at a time of heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank, with Poland having significantly increased its own defense spending in recent years. Warsaw has long pushed for a stronger permanent US military presence on its soil.
Critics, however, question the logic of reinforcing one ally while reducing commitments to others, warning it could create divisions within NATO.
