Antalya / Stockholm —
Foreign ministers from NATO’s 32 member states gathered in Sweden this week for a critical round of talks, as the alliance navigates one of its most complex geopolitical moments in decades.
The meeting, held on Swedish soil — a country that only recently joined NATO in 2024 — carries symbolic weight, underscoring the alliance’s expanded presence in the Nordic region following Russia’s prolonged war in Ukraine.
Top of the agenda were discussions on continued military support for Ukraine, burden-sharing among member states, and the growing pressure from Washington for European allies to dramatically increase their defense spending. The United States has repeatedly urged NATO partners to meet and exceed the 2% GDP defense spending threshold.
The summit also comes amid fresh questions about American commitment to European security, following President Trump’s announcement of selective troop deployments and his administration’s shifting foreign policy priorities.
Swedish Foreign Minister is expected to chair key sessions, with senior diplomats from the UK, France, Germany, and Poland playing central roles in shaping the alliance’s next strategic steps.
