Boca Chica, Texas —
SpaceX has successfully launched the most powerful version of its Starship rocket to date, marking the 12th test flight of the massive spacecraft in a mission that captured global attention — coming just 48 hours after billionaire founder Elon Musk made the bombshell announcement that SpaceX would be going public.
The rocket, standing over 120 metres tall, lifted off from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Boca Chica, Texas, in what engineers described as the most ambitious test yet. The latest iteration features significant upgrades to both the Super Heavy booster and the Starship upper stage, pushing the boundaries of what is currently the most powerful launch vehicle ever built.
The timing of the flight has drawn widespread attention on Wall Street and in the tech world. Musk’s announcement of an IPO for SpaceX — long considered one of the most valuable private companies in the world — sent shockwaves through financial markets, with analysts estimating the company’s valuation could exceed $350 billion upon listing.
Starship remains central to NASA’s Artemis moon programme and Musk’s long-stated ambition of sending humans to Mars. With each successful test, that vision inches closer to reality.
