New Delhi: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is facing strong criticism at home following India’s withdrawal from the strategically important Chabahar Port project in Iran. The opposition Congress party has termed the move harmful to India’s national interests and launched a sharp attack on the government.
The Congress party released a video on social media with the caption: “Narendra Modi once again surrendered before Trump.” In the video, the party alleges that the Modi government bowed to external pressure, undermining India’s long-term strategic and economic interests.
Opposition leaders argue that Chabahar Port was a key project for India’s access to Afghanistan and Central Asia, and pulling out of it would weaken India’s regional influence. They further claim that the decision contradicts the government’s assertions of an independent foreign policy and could damage India’s standing at the global level.
The Indian government has so far not issued a detailed response to the opposition’s criticism. However, in the past, official circles have linked the decision to international sanctions and shifting geopolitical realities.
