LAHORE: Large-scale infrastructure development projects are progressing across 15 districts of Punjab under the provincial government’s Punjab Development Program, authorities said on Wednesday.
According to officials, the Housing Department Punjab is set to complete projects worth Rs. 200 billion (approximately $700 million) in the first phase. Work has formally begun in districts including Jhang, Dera Ghazi Khan, Gujrat, Hafizabad, Jhelum, Okara, and Sargodha, while implementation in other districts is being carried out in phases.
A spokesperson said the projects primarily focus on upgrading sewerage and drainage infrastructure to address long-standing urban flooding and sanitation challenges. Under the program, 1,610 kilometers of new sewerage pipelines will be laid, while 741 kilometers of aging and damaged lines will be rehabilitated. Authorities are also constructing 92 kilometers of main drains and canals, along with more than 108 kilometers of roadside drains.
In addition, 27 new disposal stations are being built across the 15 districts, and 59 existing stations will be restored and made fully operational.
Mega storage tanks for rainwater management are also under construction in several districts as part of broader flood mitigation efforts. Officials said that once underground infrastructure is installed, roads and streets will be reconstructed under a sustainable development model aimed at ensuring long-term durability.
The spokesperson added that all projects are being monitored by WASA Punjab, with a “smart execution plan” introduced to accelerate implementation. Authorities said strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) are being enforced at development sites to ensure safety for both workers and residents.
The provincial government says the uniform rollout of development projects across multiple districts reflects Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s commitment to addressing infrastructure gaps and providing a lasting solution to urban sewerage and flooding issues.
