LAHORE: On the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) has announced a province-wide public awareness campaign against tax evasion. The decision was taken during a meeting chaired by PRA Chairman Moazzam Iqbal Sipra.
Under the initiative, the campaign will begin in educational institutions from April, encouraging students to act as PRA Ambassadors to promote tax awareness and responsible civic behaviour. Citizens will also be able to verify receipts issued by hotels, restaurants, gyms, and aesthetic clinics through the PRA mobile application and a dedicated WhatsApp number, aiming to ensure transparency and discourage the issuance of fake receipts.
In the initial phase, the School Education Department and PRA will jointly implement the campaign in schools across Punjab.
According to a PRA spokesperson, strict action will be taken against businesses issuing fake receipts, and as an incentive, up to 20 percent of recovered fines will be awarded to complainants.
The spokesperson added that the Whistleblower Act will come into immediate effect upon government approval. The introduction of financial rewards is expected to boost public reporting of violations and enhance awareness about tax compliance.
The initiative aims to promote a stronger tax culture across Punjab and encourage citizens to take an active role in ensuring transparency and accountability.
