MUMBAI — India has lost one of its most treasured musical icons. Asha Bhosle, the legendary playback singer whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema, passed away at the age of 92 — just one day after being hospitalized for a chest infection.
One of the most prolific recording artists in music history, Bhosle lent her voice to an astonishing approximately 11,000 songs across a career spanning more than seven decades. She sang in dozens of languages including Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, and Urdu, and effortlessly traversed genres from classical ragas and ghazals to jazz, pop, and cabaret — a versatility that set her apart from her contemporaries.
Born on September 8, 1933, Bhosle was the younger sister of the equally celebrated Lata Mangeshkar. Together, the two sisters became the twin pillars of Indian playback singing, shaping the sonic landscape of Bollywood for over half a century.
Bhosle received numerous lifetime achievement awards, including India’s prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award, and was recognized by the Guinness World Records for her extraordinary output. Her collaborations with music directors like R.D. Burman — whom she later married — produced some of the most beloved songs in Indian film history.
Tributes have poured in from across the world, with Indian Prime Minister, Bollywood celebrities, and millions of fans mourning the end of an era.
Asha Bhosle was more than a singer — she was a cultural institution, and her voice will continue to echo through the hearts of music lovers for generations to come.
“A voice like hers comes once in a lifetime — and the world is quieter without it.”
