Pakistan has launched its first-ever livestock insurance scheme, marking a significant step towards reducing human-wildlife conflict in the country. The initiative, introduced by WWF-Pakistan in collaboration with an insurance company, has been rolled out beginning in the Galiyat region.
According to a WWF-Pakistan spokesperson, the scheme will begin with the tagging of livestock to ensure effective monitoring and accurate compensation assessments. The primary objective is to provide financial relief to farmers who lose their animals in leopard attacks — a recurring challenge in the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan.
WWF officials stated that by compensating affected farmers promptly, the scheme aims to curb retaliatory killings of leopards and other wildlife, helping foster coexistence between local communities and endangered species.
Conservation experts have welcomed the initiative as a model that could be replicated across other wildlife-sensitive zones in the country.
