The Indus Water Commissioner has issued a flood alert after receiving information from the Indian High Commission regarding rising water levels in rivers.
According to the alert, high-level floods are expected at Head Harike downstream and Ferozepur downstream on the Sutlej River, at Madhopur downstream on the Ravi River, and at Akhnoor on the Chenab River.
India has released 200,000 cusecs of water into the Ravi River. Combined with continuous rains, water levels in the Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej have risen sharply.
According to the Flood Forecasting Division Lahore, the Chenab River at Head Marala has recorded an exceptionally high inflow of 696,534 cusecs. Meanwhile, at Ganda Singh Wala on the Sutlej River, the water flow has reached 245,236 cusecs and is expected to rise to 280,000 cusecs within the next 12 hours.
This situation poses an increased risk of flooding in low-lying areas of Punjab and southern Punjab.
