Calabria, Italy
Four Afghan migrant farmworkers were killed in a horrific arson attack in the southern Italian region of Calabria, after suspects allegedly locked them inside a minivan and set it ablaze. Italian authorities have arrested two Pakistani nationals in connection with the murders.
The attack occurred at a petrol station near the village of Amendolara. CCTV footage showed two men blocking the van’s doors from outside before throwing an incendiary liquid inside and fleeing the scene. Firefighters arrived to find all four occupants dead.
Local police chief Antonio Borelli confirmed the incident as deliberate homicide, stating: “This is certainly murder — we now need to establish the full network behind it.”
Authorities say the area had been a flashpoint of tension among migrant communities for months, with disputes over agricultural work, housing, and residency documents. At least 14 vehicle arson incidents had previously been reported in the same zone — culminating in this fatal attack. Investigations are ongoing as police work to identify further suspects and accomplices.
