At least 50 people have died of thirst in the Sahara Desert after their truck broke down and left them stranded in one of the world’s most unforgiving environments, according to a foreign news agency.
The victims were returning home to Niger from Mali following Eid al-Adha celebrations when their truck came to a halt deep in the Saharan wilderness. Stranded under extreme heat with no means of rescue, the group quickly exhausted their water supplies. Temperatures in the Sahara regularly exceed 45°C (113°F) during this time of year, making survival without water nearly impossible within hours.
Only two people survived the ordeal. The pair managed to trek on foot across the desert, eventually reaching a nearby settlement where they raised the alarm. Their accounts led rescuers to discover the tragic fate of the rest of the group.
The tragedy highlights the deadly risks faced by travelers crossing the Sahara, a route used by thousands of people each year — many of them migrants seeking passage to North Africa or Europeans countries. Breakdowns, inadequate water supplies, and the vast, trackless terrain make such crossings perilous even under planned conditions.
