The United States has refused to grant visas to 15 members of Iran’s official delegation ahead of the FIFA World Cup, in a move that has sparked diplomatic controversy and raised serious questions about America’s obligations as the tournament’s host nation.
According to Iran’s state media, players and technical staff of the Iranian national football team have been granted entry visas. However, members of the team’s administration and management — totalling 15 officials — have been denied clearance to enter the United States.
The development comes amid longstanding tensions between Washington and Tehran, with the two countries having no formal diplomatic relations. FIFA rules require host nations to guarantee entry to all participating delegations, putting the United States in potential violation of its hosting agreement.
Iranian football authorities have expressed serious concern over the situation, warning that it could affect the team’s full preparation and participation in the tournament. The matter is expected to be escalated to FIFA for urgent review.
The FIFA World Cup 2026 is being co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
