California: Renée Mayrhofer, Director of Android Platform Security at Google, has resigned after nearly nine years, accusing the company’s leadership of straying from its founding ethical values in a resignation letter published on her personal blog.
Mayrhofer cited Google’s AI contracts with the US Department of Defense as the primary reason, stating that as a pacifist she could not be part of projects with potential military applications. She referenced Google’s 2018 AI principles, issued under CEO Sundar Pichai, which pledged the company would not develop technology intended to cause harm to people.
She revealed that over 600 Google employees had signed a letter opposing such contracts, and claimed staff were not properly informed about these major policy shifts. Google has not yet issued an official response. Mayrhofer remains formally affiliated with Google until August 31, 2026, but says she is immediately ceasing work on defense-related AI projects.
