LAHORE: The Office of Safety, Security and Vigilance at the University of Management and Technology (UMT) organized a special seminar to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, aiming to raise awareness among youth about the harmful effects of drug abuse and promote public understanding of anti-narcotics efforts.
A large number of students, faculty members, and administrative staff attended the event.
The seminar featured Syed Zulfiqar Hussain, Advisor on Drug Prevention and Narcotics, as the chief guest. Other distinguished participants included Dr. Ejaz Cheema, Vice Rector UMT; Colonel (R) Syed Sakhawat, Head of the Office of Safety, Security and Vigilance; Adeel Rashid, Secretary General of Drug Abuse Treatment and Humanity; and Syed Mohsin.
Addressing the gathering, Vice Rector Dr. Ejaz Cheema said that UMT holds the distinction of being Pakistan’s first drug-free campus, where a strict zero-tolerance policy against drug use is actively enforced.
“Providing students with a drug-free, safe, and healthy educational environment is our foremost priority,” he said, adding that protecting the younger generation from the dangers of drugs is a collective national responsibility requiring the active participation of parents, teachers, and all segments of society.
Speaking on the occasion, Colonel (R) Syed Sakhawat emphasized that drug abuse poses a serious threat to individuals, families, and society at large. He stated that the slogan “Say No to Drugs” represents more than a campaign message; it is a commitment to securing a brighter and safer future for the younger generation.
Chief Guest Syed Zulfiqar Hussain highlighted the importance of engaging youth in positive activities, character-building initiatives, and healthy lifestyles. He praised educational institutions such as UMT for their role in combating drug abuse and promoting constructive social values.
He stressed that awareness campaigns and collective public consciousness are essential tools in the fight against narcotics, noting that drug abuse continues to undermine the talent, education, and future prospects of young people.
“A drug-free Pakistan is the foundation of a safe, healthy, and prosperous future,” he said.
At the conclusion of the seminar, vaping devices were symbolically destroyed to demonstrate opposition to substance abuse. Participants also joined an awareness walk aimed at promoting anti-drug initiatives and reinforcing the message of a drug-free society.
The event concluded with Vice Rector Dr. Ejaz Cheema presenting commemorative souvenirs to the distinguished guests in recognition of their contributions to drug prevention and awareness efforts.
