Pakistan observed Ashura — the 10th day of Muharram — on Friday, with large-scale religious processions held across the country to commemorate the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (RA), grandson of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), and his companions at the Battle of Karbala over 1,400 years ago.
Processions featuring the Shabi-e-Alam (symbolic standard), Zuljinah (riderless horse), and ceremonial coffins wound through major cities including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, Quetta, and Peshawar, drawing hundreds of thousands of mourners who gathered to pay tribute to one of Islam’s most revered tragedies.
Authorities imposed heavy security measures across the country ahead of the solemn occasion. Mobile phone and internet services were suspended in sensitive areas to prevent any potential security threats, while Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure was enforced along procession routes, banning the display of weapons.
Key roads and intersections along procession routes were sealed to traffic, with law enforcement and paramilitary personnel deployed in large numbers to ensure the safety of participants.
The day of Ashura holds profound religious and historical significance for Muslims worldwide, symbolizing the timeless struggle against oppression and injustice. Pakistani authorities urged citizens to cooperate with security arrangements and maintain peace throughout the day’s observances.
