US-Iran Talks Through Pakistan Mediation Have Not Failed: Araghchi
NEW DELHI — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, during his visit to India, told reporters in New Delhi on Saturday that nuclear talks with the United States mediated by Pakistan have not collapsed, but are facing significant difficulties.
“We did not start the war — we defended ourselves,” Araghchi said, adding that Tehran is actively working to maintain the current ceasefire.
On the sensitive issue of the Strait of Hormuz, the Iranian top diplomat rejected accusations that Tehran is responsible for disruptions to international shipping. He clarified that the strait is closed only to nations that were militarily engaged against Iran, while other countries including India continue to receive safe passage. Araghchi noted that Iranian naval forces are actively guiding vessels through the waterway due to the presence of sea mines, describing the situation as “very complicated.”
Regarding relations with Washington, Araghchi struck a cautious tone, saying Iran places no trust in the United States and that contradictory signals from American officials are undermining the negotiating process. Despite this, he expressed cautious optimism, stating: “I hope wisdom and diplomacy will prevail.”
The remarks came as regional tensions remain high following recent hostilities and ongoing uncertainty over Iran’s nuclear programme.
