London (International Desk) An independent review into maternity services at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust has revealed that more than 500 women and newborns suffered avoidable harm over a period of 13 years due to systemic failures and substandard care. The 401-page report, led by maternity expert Donna Ockenden, is being described as the largest review in the hospital’s history.
The report identified a toxic workplace culture, chronic staff shortages, bullying, and a persistent failure to learn from past safety incidents. Women in labour were reportedly told to “manage themselves” during delivery. Families affected by the failings said they waited years before their concerns were acknowledged. Gary Andrews, whose daughter Winter died just 23 minutes after birth in 2019, said senior officials were more concerned with “reputation management” than accountability. The Trust’s leadership has issued an unconditional apology to all affected families, while victims’ groups are demanding immediate and systemic reform across UK maternity services.
