Washington: US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% customs duties on all goods from any country that levies a Digital Services Tax (DST) on American tech companies. The warning came as EU nations were racing to meet Trump’s July 4th deadline to reduce tariffs on US goods.
French President Emmanuel Macron pushed back, stating France would not abolish its 3% DST — in place since 2019 — which targets large digital platforms earning over €750 million globally and €25 million within France. Trump responded by threatening 100% duties on French wine.
Trump further warned that the new tariffs would override any existing trade agreements, including the US-EU deal struck last year that capped American duties on European goods at 15% in exchange for zero EU duties on US industrial products. The Office of the US Trade Representative has long maintained that such digital taxes unfairly discriminate against American companies that dominate the global tech sector.
