A masked man dubbed “Mexican Batman” online has been capturing motorcycle thieves and taping them to street lamp posts in the city of Lagos de Moreno, in Mexico’s Jalisco state. As his signature mark, he draws cat-like whiskers on the captured men’s faces and writes the Spanish word “ratero” (thief) on their foreheads.
The vigilante hangs handwritten notes on pink and yellow paper detailing the alleged crimes around the necks of those he ties up, placing the stolen motorcycle nearby as evidence. Several of the men have also been beaten, with one reportedly left in serious condition. Despite his “justice campaign,” police regard the vigilante as the criminal and the bound men as victims.
The first such incident was reported on June 13, when a young man was found taped to a pole with a cardboard sign accusing him of theft. Similar cases followed in subsequent days. State Security Secretary Juan Pablo Hernández confirmed authorities have identified five such cases so far and have traced two vehicles potentially linked to the incidents, though the vigilante remains at large.
