Brazil has refused to issue visas to two US officials who sought to meet with Brazilian electoral authorities less than three months ahead of the country’s presidential election. A diplomatic source confirmed the development to news agency AFP.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the Brazilian source said the decision stemmed from concerns that the meeting could be exploited for political purposes. The development comes as Brazil’s right-wing presidential candidate, Flavio Bolsonaro, once again claimed this week that the country’s electronic voting system is not secure.
According to sources, the US officials submitted their visa applications on July 20. The two officials reportedly wanted to discuss freedom-of-expression issues related to the elections with local electoral authorities.
Notably, the visa request was filed on the same day Flavio Bolsonaro held a private meeting with foreign diplomats, during which he reportedly raised questions about the reliability of Brazil’s electronic voting system.
It is worth recalling that Flavio’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, was barred from running for public office by electoral authorities in 2023 after making similar claims about the electoral system while still in office. He was later convicted of plotting to seize power following his defeat in the 2022 presidential election and is currently under house arrest serving a 27-year sentence.
