Israeli PM directs military to strengthen and widen presence across Lebanese territory
Tel Aviv / Beirut | June 1, 2026
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally announced a significant escalation of ongoing military operations in Lebanon, ordering the Israeli Defense Forces to deepen and expand their footprint across Lebanese territory. The declaration came following an emergency security cabinet meeting in Tel Aviv attended by senior military commanders and intelligence chiefs.
Netanyahu stated that Israel’s security interests in Lebanon would be protected at any cost, and that the military campaign would be broadened to neutralize any potential threat posed by Hezbollah and allied militant groups. He described the escalation as a necessary and calculated response to what he called continued hostile activity along Israel’s northern border.
The Israeli military spokesperson confirmed that additional combat units have been deployed to southern Lebanon and that the frequency of aerial strikes has increased markedly. Lebanese civil defense authorities reported intensified Israeli air strikes across southern Beirut suburbs, the Bekaa Valley, and the port city of Tyre, with significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
The Lebanese government condemned the Israeli military actions as a blatant violation of its national sovereignty and called on the United Nations and the Arab League to intervene immediately. Beirut has also communicated urgently with Washington, urging the United States to pressure Israel into withdrawing its forces from Lebanese soil.
The United Nations Secretary-General expressed grave alarm over the rapidly deteriorating situation, calling on all parties to observe an immediate ceasefire. A UN spokesperson warned that Lebanese civilians are enduring unbearable hardship and that the delivery of humanitarian aid has been severely disrupted by the ongoing hostilities.
Regional analysts warn that the Israeli escalation risks triggering a wider conflagration, particularly if other armed actors in the region respond militarily, further destabilizing an already fractured Middle East.
